PECULIAR LOOKING ANIMALS
Added on: 29th Nov 2015
HAIRY FROGFISH
Sometimes called an anglerfish, it uses a fleshy lure to
mimic the behaviour of a marine worm and catch its prey.
SPHYNX CAT
Susceptible to both sunburn and hypothermia, this breed
of cat is known for its hairlessness and extroversion.
SLENDER LORIS
Its huge eyes allow this Sri Lankan jungle dweller to hunt
for insects at night. It is also being hunted, however, by
poachers and natives who believe it has magical properties.
LONG-EARED JERBOA
Resembling mice, not much is known about these small
jumping rodents. Their habitat consists mostly of northern
China and Mongolia and they usually come out only at night.
SAIGA
A very unique looking antelope the Saiga is known for its
distinctive nose. It is also a very prolific reproducer in
spite of increasing human encroachment on its habitat.
SHOEBILL
Related to storks and also known as a whalehead, it should be
obvious where this east African bird gets its name from. It is one
of the largest birds in the world and can grow to be over 1 metre tall.
HISPANIOLAN SOLENODON
This is one of the few species of mammal capable of producing toxic
saliva but because it was the dominant predator on the island of
Hispaniola prior to colonization it has not developed any effective
defences to ward off predators like dogs and cats that were
introduced by human settlers.
AYE-AYE
Found in Madagascar the aye-aye is the world’s largest nocturnal
primate. Often noted for its unique foraging techniques, it taps on
trees until it finds larvae, gnaws a hole in the wood, and inserts
its middle finger to pull them out.
