HOW TO BE MORE ENVIRONMENTALLY CONSCIOUS
Added on: 24th Aug 2015
EAT LESS MEAT
Not so many people know that it takes a lot of energy and water to
produce meat for food. Most environmentalists today would advise
people to be a vegetarian at least once a week and eat just small
portions of meat for the rest of the week to save considerable
amounts of water and energy.
GREEN UP YOUR LIFE
Changing your lifestyle can help you contribute in protecting the
environment. You can do this by switching to solar energy at home
and growing as much of your own food in the garden as you can.
You can also try making your own cleaning products at home.
HANG DRY
Try to hang drying, instead of using that tumble dryer.
CUT UP OLD CLOTHES AND USE THEM AS RAGS
Instead of just throwing your old clothes, you can recycle them by
cutting them up and converting them into rags. This recycling process
can be done on old, stained or holey shirts; or any absorbent material
that can be used to wipe out dirt or spills.
BE PARTICULAR ABOUT THE FISH THAT YOU EAT
Not so many people are aware that some fish can have negative
impacts on our ocean ecosystems when they are captured and
taken out from the waters. That is why you should be particular about
the species of fish that you eat. If you eat fish for protein, there are
textured vegetable proteins that you can buy as alternatives.
REPLACE SOME OF YOUR ELECTRIC-POWERED
APPLIANCES WITH HAND-POWERED TOOLS
Cutting down on electricity can contribute a lot in saving energy.
One of the many ways through which you can do so is by replacing
your common electric-powered kitchen appliances with hand-powered
tools. Among them are coffee grinders, juicers, stick blenders,
can openers and electric knives.
USE MATCHES, NOT LIGHTERS
Matches are more environment-friendly than lighters.
Lighters are made out of plastic and are filled with butane fuel.
Since they are disposable, around 1.5 billion of them make up the
world’s landfills every year. Instead of choosing lighters, choose
matches that are made out of cardboard. The paper used
to make these matches is usually recycled.
USE RECYCLED ALUMINIUM AND GLASS
Using recycled aluminium and glass can help you contribute to
energy conservation. You can make twenty recycled aluminium cans
out of the amount of energy that it takes to produce one brand new
aluminium can. Also, every ton of glass that you recycle saves around
nine gallons of fuel oil, which is equivalent to the amount needed to
make one glass out of virgin materials.
