THE TOPMOST ANIMALS LOOKED FOR ON GOOGLE SEARCH

Added on: 21st Feb 2016

SHARK

hammerhead shark

Despite being billed as one of the most terrifying creatures on the

planet, the shark is a predator but is responsible for considerably

few human deaths – only 4.3 on average annually. More dangerous

animals include cows and horses which each kill 20 people in the

U.S. alone every year. (The most popular animal on Google on this

list even kills seven times more people than the shark.)

BIRD

bluebird of happiness

Holding its position in the top 10 (along with the following six animals)

since Google Trends started in 2004, the bird is one of the most

common animals on the Earth today. Since the 1600’s, almost

130 bird species have gone extinct due to humans.

BEAR

eurasian brown bear

The bear is a mostly solitary animal besides when courting or with

young. Out of the eight species of bear, six are omnivorous;

otherwise, the panda bear almost exclusively eats bamboo and

the polar bear almost exclusively eats meat.

FISH

largemouth bass

Ironically coming in just after the bear, fish have more species

diversity (at 32,000 different species) than any other vertebrate

animal. They also show great diversity in size from the 0.3 inch (8mm)

stout infant fish to the 52 t (16m) long whale shark.

CHICKEN

poltava chicken

Chickens are so widely raised for their meat that they outnumber any

other bird species – today there are over 24 billion of them globally.

HORSE

horse

Used for millennia in war and labour, the horse originally had multiple

toes (about 50 million years of evolution back). Most horses are

domesticated and even the horses that people refer to as wild are

actually feral: their ancestors were domesticated by humans at

some point and since escaped and lived in the wild. The only true

wild horse is the Przewalski’s horse, a rare and endangered species

recently reintroduced to the Mongolian steppes.

CAT

Tortoise shell cat

Though charting at the number 2 spot on our list of the most popular

animals on Google, the cat is the most popular pet in the world.

Beyond being excellent companions, cats can see in near-

darkness, making them top-notch hunters.

DOG

australian cattle dog

Not surprising that man’s best friend takes the number 1 spot as the

most searched animal on Google. Though only 17-24% of dogs are

domesticated pets, the global dog population is estimated as high as

1 billion, meaning that the dog really is top dog.
