EVENTS OF 2015 THAT DEFINED AN ICONIC YEAR

BAGA MASSACRE
In 2015, numerous bloody terrorist attacks occurred. The first one
took place between January 3rd and January 7th when Boko Haram,
an Islamic extremist group based in Nigeria killed more than 2,000
people in the Nigerian town of Baga.
UKRAINIAN CRISIS
Despite having been overshadowed by the migrant crisis and the
war against terrorism later on, the Ukrainian Crisis was deepening
in 2015. Taken on January 22nd, this picture shows a totally
demolished kindergarten in war-stricken Debaltseve, Donestk Area.
CYCLONE MARCIA
Youngsters taking shelter from big sea waves due to Tropical
Cyclone Marcia on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia.
Marcia was a category 5 severe tropical cyclone that made
landfall at its peak strength over central Queensland on
February 20th.
WORLD WILDLIFE DAY
On March 3rd, the World Wildlife Day, Kenyan President Uhuru
Kenyatta set fire to a giant, 15-ton pile of illegally-hunted ivory to
discourage poaching and ivory trade. In Kenya, ivory trade
poses a major threat to local elephant population.
DAWN´S VISIT TO CERES
On March 6th, NASA’s Dawn probe entered orbit around Ceres,
becoming the first spacecraft to visit a dwarf planet. Since its
discovery in 1801, Ceres was known as a planet, then an
asteroid and later a dwarf planet.
AIRBUS A320-211 CRASH
Unfortunately, several aviation accidents also happened in 2015.
On March 24th, an Airbus A320-211 operated by Germanwings crashed
in the French Alps after its co-pilot Andreas Lubitz deliberately
crashed the plane, killing all 150 people on board.
CHIDORIGAFUCHI CHERRY BLOSSOM VIEWING
Every spring, more than a million people from all over Japan come
to the Tokyo´s Chidorigafuchi Moat to see the spectacular
cherry blossom display. The moat is lined with hundreds
of cherry trees of different kinds.
EARTHQUAKE IN NEPAL
On April 25th, a devastating magnitude 7.8 earthquake hit Nepal
and caused 8,857 deaths in the country. One of the deadliest
natural disasters of the year, it killed another 130 people in India,
27 in China, and 4 in Bangladesh.
WORLD´S MOST EXPENSIVE PAINTING AND SCULPTURE
In May, version O of “Les Femmes d’Alger” by Pablo Picasso was
sold for US$179.3 million at Christie’s auction in New York,
while the sculpture “L’Homme au doigt” by Alberto Giacometti
was sold for US$141.3 million, setting a new world record for a
painting and for a sculpture.
